Home Pest Management
Some people think bed bugs are a joke. They were almost completely wiped out in the United States by the end of World War II. Unfortunately, since the 1990s, they have had a revival. The threat from bed bugs is more real now more than ever. Bed bugs feed purely on the blood of living mammals. These pests normally make their home in your bed, with you as a source of food.
Bed bug bites may be minor, or they can be more pronounced. Bites from bed bugs can range from barely noticeable to irritating welts. Signs and symptoms of the bites may be more evident at night than during the day. Minimize the risk of bed bug bites by maintaining a clean living area. Home pest control begins with preserving a nice and clean residence. Regular thorough cleaning and keeping your mattress sealed will help reduce the severity of the problem. Seal up any cracks in the walls or the headboard of your bed to deny them a place to hide. If you have the misfortune to already have an infestation of bed bugs, cleanliness will not solve the problem. The insects will need to be exterminated with pesticides, which need to be both effective and safe for use in living quarters. This may not be a DIY job - consider bringing in pros to deal with the issue.
Ants in the home can be a common problem. Ants can enter your house through the tiniest cracks. Ants are adept at finding food sources, and then calling in their friends. Ants live in colonies and are able to quickly move the colony for new food sources or to avoid threats. Most home-based pest control treatments are not thorough enough to truly eradicate an existing ant problem. Expert pest control is encouraged based on how difficult it is to locate and kill the source of the ants. If only a few ants remain and the food source is still available, more will soon be on their way.
Rodents come in many obnoxious types, just a few of which are mice, rats and squirrels. No matter the rodent type, they can be identified by pronounced front teeth. Rodents can cause harm to your home itself with their ever-gnawing teeth as well as the items in your home.
Rodents can contaminate food in your home as well as eat any exposed sources of food. Mice reproduce rapidly, with a single breeding pair being able to easily produce hundreds of offspring in a year. Dealing with a rodent problem will likely involve a combination of traps and poison; both of these require careful attention and proper usage.
We all have heard of termites munching on wood. Termites may also eat paper, books, living plants, insulation and swimming pool filters and liners. While there are various warning signs you may notice, most home owners are not aware of what to look for. Termite problems are best left to the pros. As a home seller you may be legally required to disclose termite history and treatment. Explaining to a potential buyer that you did not adequately fix a serious problem could be disastrous.
Bringing a termite infestation under control should never, ever be a do it yourself project. Termites have a tendency to sneak in through areas of the house which require advanced carpentry skills simply to gain access to. Pest control professionals have training and access to equipment that the average homeowner just does not have: pesticides and equipment that are dangerous and ineffective if not used properly.. Insecticide must be injected into the foundation walls and alongside the foundation. Clearly, this is neither a wise nor safe project for the average person.
